Helping Leaders Become Ready for What Comes Next

Photo of John Bradford, Executive Coach

For more than 47 years, I have worked with leaders in education, corporate organizations, leadership development, and executive coaching. Across those settings, I have seen talented people succeed at one level and then discover that greater responsibility requires something different from them.

That experience shaped the work I do today.

I help leaders recognize the gap between what has made them successful and what greater leadership responsibility will require. My approach is practical, direct, and grounded in the real situations leaders face every day.

I believe the workplace is the leadership lab. Growth happens when leaders apply what they are learning to real decisions, difficult conversations, increased expectations, and the responsibility of developing others.

My purpose is simple: help leaders become ready before the demands of the role expose the gaps.

My Story

Experience Shaped by Opportunity, Work, and People

I grew up the youngest of seven children. My father was a cab driver, and my mother worked in a kitchen. We did not have much, but we had values that mattered—integrity, hard work, responsibility, and perseverance.

I became the first in my family to earn a college degree and later a master’s degree. Along the way, teachers, mentors, managers, and leaders saw possibilities in me and opened doors I could not have opened alone.

That experience has stayed with me throughout my career.

For more than four decades, I have worked in classrooms, corporate organizations, executive offices, and coaching conversations. I have seen talented people succeed, struggle, recover, grow, and take on responsibilities they once thought were beyond them.

Those experiences taught me something important: potential matters, but preparation matters too.

Today, that belief is at the center of my work. I help leaders prepare for greater responsibility and help organizations develop people before leadership gaps become costly.

Someone helped me become ready for opportunities I could not yet see. I try to do the same for others.

How I Coach

A multicultural office team high-fiving and celebrating a successful collaboration.

My coaching starts with the leader, the demands of the role, and the business results that matter.

Together, we identify where greater responsibility may require different behaviors and focus development on what will make the greatest difference. My approach is practical, individualized, and grounded in real work—not hypothetical leadership situations.

Leadership Readiness focuses on five behavioral patterns:

Judgment — making sound decisions when the answer is not obvious

Presence — creating confidence and credibility when the stakes increase

Communication — making expectations, decisions, and direction clear

Accountability — taking ownership and holding others appropriately responsible

Development — helping others build capability and become more effective

Assessment helps us understand where to begin. Coaching turns that insight into action. Real workplace situations provide the opportunity to practice, adjust, and demonstrate progress.

I use the Bradford Leadership Readiness Assessment along with established assessment tools, including CheckPoint 360™, PXT Select®, Everything DiSC®, and The Five Behaviors®.

The objective is not simply to become a better leader. It is to become ready for the responsibility ahead.
